We’re Going on a Pudsey Bear Hunt

As it is Children in Need this week, we thought we would show our support with a blog all about books with bears in them!  The more we thought about it, the more there seemed to be. Here are a few of our favourites.

Scruffy Bear and the Six White Mice by Chris Wormell
This is a traditional story where Scruffy Bear helps the Six White Mice to hide from three predators. What makes this book stand out is Wormell’s illustration style, he captures expression in animals so well.  This is a superb story too for children to learn and then imitate, with them adding their own predators.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury
A classic bear story.  What sets this book apart is it’s superb storytelling and performance opportunities.  Children just love to join in.  The illustrations by Helen Oxenbury, as would be expected, bring the story alive.  It’s a real hybrid of narrative and poetry, a narrative poem for the younger classes.  Plenty of opportunities for links to PE and Geography through the theme of journeys.

The Last Polar Bears by Harry Horse
A short novel, this Harry Horse book is perfect for Years 3 and 4.  This one, an adventure to find the last polar bears, is written as a series of letters – a hybrid narrative!  What more could you ask for?  Horse’s books are well worth picking up for lower key stage 2 classes, full of adventure and fun.

A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Foreman
Although Paddington is probably well known amongst those of us born pre-1980, it may be that he has passed by the younger generation.  Paddington has recently enjoyed a resurgence and the books have been re-illustrated.  It could become a new favourite for children. Lovely stories of adventure with clumsy fun thrown in.

These are just a few. Tell us your favourites and we can start a new Pinterest board. Enjoy Children in Need and if you have enjoyed our blog please do pop by and donate, we will be.
