Starting Points: The Disgusting Sandwich

Starting Points are written to help you plan book-based units of work. In this set based on The Disgusting Sandwich by Gareth Edwards you’ll find ideas to support spoken language, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. This Starting Points resource will give you everything you need to plan a beautiful book-based unit of work for children in Year 1 and Year 2.

In this set of Starting Points, you will find planning to support the following grammar objectives:

Year 1

  • regular plural noun suffixes –s, -es

  • suffixes that can be added to verbs where no change is needed in the spelling of root words

  • sequencing sentences to form short narratives

  • separation of words with spaces

  • introduction to capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks to demarcate sentences

  • joining words and joining clauses using and

Year 2

  • use of -ly in Standard English to turn adjectives into adverbs

  • subordination (using when, if, that, because) and co-ordination (using or, and, but)

  • expanded noun phrases for description and specification

  • how the grammatical patterns in a sentence indicate its function as a statement, question, exclamation or command

  • correct choice and consistent use of present tense and past tense throughout writing

  • use of capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks to demarcate sentences

  • apostrophes to mark where letters are missing in spelling.
