Inspirational quotations about reading

There was once a girl who loved reading. Wherever she went, she took a book with her. When the mean girls at her gymnastics club called her Book Worm, she’d just shrug and get back to her books. She’d devour adventures of girls holding midnight feasts at their smart boarding school; she’d sob when the courageous lion was slain on an ancient stone table, and be amazed as she learnt about the planets, scientists and explorers.

As she grew, she encountered Heathcliff and Cathy, Darcy and Elizabeth, and Beatrice and Benedict. She loved some of them, but not all of them. However, on and on she read. She read to learn and eventually learned to teach children to read.

She knew, and of course still knows to this day, the power of books and reading. Not just for offering an escape from the world around us, but to help us understand that world and to appreciate what it has to offer us.

Here at Primary English we know that reading is a transformational activity, which is why we spend so much time talking about it and helping our fellow teachers to teach reading. But it’s not just use who know the power of reading. Here are just a few of the quotations we’ve collated about the power of books and reading.
