This teaching sequence focuses on identifying and explaining how meaning is enhanced through the choice of words and phrases (content domain 2g). It is intended that there are sufficient activities in this teaching sequence to engage your children in meaningful learning for one week of guided reading lessons.
This teaching sequence includes:
A guided reading lesson plan in an editable word document format
A copy of The Eagle by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Poetic Features cards for children to match features and their definitions
A Poetry Magnifying Glass resource for analysing features of the poem
A Vocabulary Grid for studying the meaning of words from the poem
A Three Things vocabulary prompt to encourage children to explore using target words in different contexts
A photocopiable set of comprehension questions for independent or teacher/ TA supported work
An independent writing activity allowing children to write their own poems using the features found in The Eagle.
We’ve pitched this planning at children in Year 5 and Year 6. You may also find it works with your Year 4 class.
