Christmas quotations to warm your heart

If you’ve visited the Primary English website before, or you follow our social media accounts, you’ll know that we’re avid collectors of literary quotations. A few years ago, we asked our graphic designer to create some Christmas graphics using quotations from stories, songs and Christmas carols. They’re lovely and we share some of them here for you to enjoy too.

Always winter, but never Christmas.

C S Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is one of my favourite novels. I remember rereading favourite scenes in this book as a child. I also remember that my copy fell apart as a consequence of the many re-readings I undertook.

So this is Christmas…

From John Lennon’s classic Christmas song. I love the illustration our designer created to accompany this quotation.

At one time, most of my friends could hear the bells…

The Polar Express is a fantastic picture book that has become a firm favourite with children of all ages. The big question of course is: can you still hear the bell?

It was the beginning of the greatest Christmas ever.

The Book Thief is such an incredible book. Who could forget the snowman in the basement!

You shall give birth to a boy, and he shall be called Jesus.

I love the vintage appearance of this particular image. I also love the quotation from Luke’s gospel that sets the Christmas story in motion.

In the bleak mid-winter

Whether you’re reading the poem or singing the carol, In the bleak midwinter, is a real favourite at Christmas time.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

This scene is fantastic. It really does look a lot like Christmas.

Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child

The Coventry Carol has a haunting beauty. I recall singing this carol, as a chorister, in Coventry cathedral late a night. Simply beautiful.

Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents

It’s Jo March, isn’t it. She cuts to the heart of the matter and you just can’t help but agree with her. What a literary legend.

The Advent bells call out ‘Prepare’

Ring in the season with advent bells. This beautiful landscape fits the words of John Betjeman’s perfectly.

Love came down at Christmas

Another poignant poems by Christina Rossetti.

I will honour Christmas in my heart.

We hope you will, Scrooge.

‘twas the night before Christmas

Listen carefully, you might just here Santa and his reindeer on the rooftop.
